Fundamentally my work is linked to nature and light. Memory and process, the immediacy of drawing from science and nature are the means in how I transform experiences and references into art works. Over the past few decades I have been studying Biology, Geology and other sciences and how shapes and images within these studies have influenced my compositions.

My ceramic wall paintings are a distillation of many influences and experiences. The work lies between painting and sculpture, and it is this “in‐between” ambiguity that captivates my interest as a ceramist. I manipulate the balance between two and three dimensional perception, between abstract and minimalist concerns, these are some of the diverse influences that walk into the studio with me. Complex textures, patterns of uncertain origin and the identity of clay are some other main concerns. Yet the simple compositions that I make become departure points for an extraordinary range of surface treatments, from the austere to the indulgent. There is also the balance between artistic control and the operations of chance. To even the odds, I invite chance into my studio so that this delicate balance remains a mystery even to me.
